Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Researchers should consult the Records Description List to determine which box contains the file that they are interested in.

  • Function / Content
These files have been maintained by the Registered Schools Board to provide a history of all Non-Government schools in Victoria since registration. The files contained in this series are those of closed schools or else inactive file parts of schools still in operation.

The contents of the files include an application for registration, correspondence to and from the Registered Schools Board, inspectors reports, other correspondence, memoranda, notifications of extensions or alterations to schools, schedules of school fees, extracts of minutes of meetings of the Registered Schools Board where those minutes concerned the particular school, maps and plans, applications to open schools, building survey reports, trust deeds for the purposes of holding fees payable by overseas students, and myriad other documents concerning the administrative functioning of these schools.

Some file covers contain lists of relevant dates in the schools history, eg. date registered, any change in grade levels taught at the school, Registered Schools Board endorsements and extensions of endorsements.

This series of files have been microfiched, but the filing system continues to the present day. The microfiche has been retained by the Registered Schools Board as at October 1997.

  • Recordkeeping System
The files are boxed in sequential order by school number. For the period 1906 to 1952 there is an alphabetical index by school name available in the PROV Search Room which allows the researcher to identify a schools number.
