Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the Records Description List for VPRS 10369 to obtain the required unit number. See System of Arrangement and Control below for further information.

Note that some records originally part of this series were sentenced as temporary records, under Public Record Office Standard 07/01 Var 4, class 12.5.2 and either destroyed or returned to Department of Premier and Cabinet in 2017.

  • Function / Content
This series consists of personnel files maintained by the Premiers Office for its permanent and temporary employees.

The cover of each file records the employees name, classification and division of the agency. For permanent employees, a card within the file records information including full name, date of birth, classification and brief details of any transfers/promotions.

An employees file typically contained forms and correspondence relating to the employees appointment, promotions, transfers or salary increases. Much of these records are from the Public Service Board, in compliance with the provisions relating to promotions and appointments in the various Acts.

Files also contain documentation relating to various types of leave, such as medical certificates, applications for recreation leave, leave records, etc.

The records in Units 40-52 are General Staff Files. These are general subject files on personnel matters, such as Public Service Regulations, Departmental Returns of Accumulated Recreation Leave, Sick Leave Pulmonary Tuberculosis, etc.

Interested researchers should note that the Public Service Board (VA 886) was required to keep a record of all officers in the public service, their length of service, salaries and wages and other employment details. VPRS 9889 Record Cards of Public Servants may contain further information on Premiers Office employees.

  • Recordkeeping System
The personnel files for employees are arranged alphabetically by surname. Units 1-33 contain files for employees whose classification was the Technical and General Division.

The records in Units 34-39 are files for employees in the Office of the Agent-General. Again, these are arranged alphabetically by the employees surname. However, within these units can also be found files of other Premiers Office staff, many of which were classified as Professional Division. If you cannot find the personnel file you are interested in, researchers should check the relevant alphabetical category in Units 34-39.

A public servants classification was recorded in the annual Returns of Persons Employed in the Public Service (or Blue Books).

There is no discernible system of arrangement for the General Staff Files (Units 40-52). In the Summary Guide there is a list of the file titles, however this gives no indication of the unit number of each file.
