How to use the Records
This series has been digitised and is available online. Access to the digitised records is available via the physical records details pages.
A microfiche copy of the series is also available in the reading rooms. See VPRS 8223.
Consult this series to obtain the registration number for a particular female prisoner. Entries are arranged alphabetically by surname. In it was recorded the prisoner registration number, the register number, and the page or folio number for that prisoner's registration details in VPRS 516.
The registration number will assist the researcher to locate a prisoner's entry in VPRS 516 Central Register of Female Prisoners.
Function / Content
Prisoners were registered in the Central Register of Female Prisoners (VPRS 516) soon after they were convicted and committed to a gaol. After release from gaol, if a woman re-offended, details of the subsequent offences and where committed (name of gaol) were recorded in the register under her original registration number.
Volume one (VPRS 10879/P0, unit 1) of the index was used until there was no space for new entries. The names of some prisoners in volume 1 also appear in volume 2 (unit 2) along with new names. Further research is required to establish the reason why some names from volume 1 were also entered in volume 2.
There is no indication on the index as to the date that it was commenced. It has been assumed that it was begun soon after the Central Register came into use.
Recordkeeping System
Entries were made in the index in alphabetical order by surname. Information recorded includes the name of the prisoner, registration number and the register number and folio number for each prisoner's entry in the register, VPRS 516. The units were arranged in volume number order.
