  • How to use the Records
The alphabetical index at the front of each volume should be consulted to find the name of a person, office or organisation. This index will indicate the folio (or page) upon which the correspondence is registered.

  • Function / Content
This series comprises a Register of Inwards Correspondence created by the Central Roads Board from 1853 to 1857. Summary details of letters received were recorded in the registers. Each letter was allocated an annual single number. Entries in the registers were grouped in categories by source or subject, e.g. all letters re Brighton Road were registered on the one folio of the B Section of the register.

None of the registered correspondence is in custody (as of July 1999) and may not have survived.

The Central Roads Board (VA 2803) was established circa March 1853 with responsibility for the formation, construction, improvement, management and maintenance of proclaimed main roads and bridges and for the co-ordination of the works undertaken by the District Road Boards. The primary officers were the Secretary, Treasurer and an Inspector-General of Roads. The Central Roads Board was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).

In 2001, as part of the ARAD Project VPRS 1113/P was reserialised as described in the table below,

There is an alphabetical index is placed at the front of each volume with the names or offices or organisations and the folio (or page) numbers upon which correspondence is registered. Correspondence was allocated the next available registration number from a sequential list of numbers. The registration number and details about the correspondence were then entered in the register under the source of the correspondence (eg. Department, municipality etc.).
