Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Portions of this series are indexed by VPRS 1116 Register of Outward Correspondence , VPRS Register of Outward Correspondence and VPRS Register of Outward Correspondence. Date ranges of these records need to be consulted.

For correspondence not indexed by these series, the Records Description List should be consulted.

  • Function / Content
This series consists of mainly letter-press books containing the outward correspondence of the agencies concerned with the construction of roads and bridges. The volumes were commenced by the Central Roads Board in 1857 (VA 2803) and continued by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964), the Department of Railways and Roads (VA 2875) and the Department of Public Works (Roads and Bridges Branch 1877 1888 and Local Government Branch c1888 1956). The main responsibility was removed from VA 669 Public Works Department with the establishment of the Country Roads Board (VA 722) in 1913.

It is apparent that the record series passed directly from one agency to the next as responsibility was transferred from one to the other.

  • Recordkeeping System
Units 1 t0 8 are controlled by consecutive running numbers with separate volumes for the different Branches of the Central Roads Board with S signifying the Secretarys Branch and E the Inspector-Generals Branch.

Units 9 to 89 continue to be arranged according to consecutive numbers with the preceding numbers appearing to indicate the volume of the letterbooks in which the correspondence was written. This appears to reflect the practice of having more than one book being used at the one time.

Units 90 to 145 are still arranged by consecutive numbers, but the cover designation indicates a date range rather than the number range.
