How to use the Records
As there is no register of properties in Public Record Office Victoria custody, Yarra Valley Water must be contacted (ph: 9874 2122) to acquire the property service number. When the property service number is obtained, scan the record description list to locate the relevant item number.
Function / Content
This series only includes plans that were transferred from the MMBW to Yarra Valley Water VA 4106 in 1995 when responsibility for water supply/sewerage in the Yarra River catchment area was transferred from MMBW to Yarra Valley Water.
The Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (M.M.B.W) VA 1007 created Property Sewerage plans to identify internal sewerage fixtures and connections to the sewerage main. All of the survey and plan records related to the survey of Melbourne metropolitan areas subsequent to subdivision (for which, see records of Crown lands for survey, subdivision and sale/alienation). The function of the plans is to document the administration of water supply, drainage and sewerage responsibilities.
Plumbers use the plans for maintenance. Every property within the region covered by Yarra Valley Water has a unique property service number. The region stretches north and east of metropolitan Melbourne through the Yarra River basin.
Recordkeeping System
A scale of 40'=1 inch was used, and the plans are arranged in property number order, running in sequence along streets. In 1995, when the M.M.B.W was split into Parks and Waterways, Melbourne Water, Yarra Valley Water (ACN 066 902 501), South East Water and City West Water, each Retail Water Company took control of the Property Sewerage Plans in their own boundaries. The drawing of these boundaries determined that Property Sewerage Plans in one sequence could be split up and transferred to the three retail companies created by the Water Industry Act 1994.
Some numbers in the Property Sewerage sequence are seven to eight digits long rather than the more familiar six-digit number. Prior to 1995 an experiment was undertaken with some areas to have the property Sewerage Number the same as the installation number. An installation number is a seven to eight digit number unique to the property itself. The installation number is created prior to the Property Sewerage Number, which is created only when the property has been connected to the system. The experiment was discontinued after only a short time but some seven-eight digit Property Service Numbers remain.
The plans have been imaged as Graphic Interchange Format files to a database and electronic versions must be referred to for any intended plumbing work or renovation.
