Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Consult the Records Description List for VPRS 1165 to obtain the required unit number.

  • Function / Content
This series comprises letter books of the Secretary to the Premier, containing copies of outward correspondence.

Another series is recorded in Unit 1: its date range predates the Premiers Office which was created in 1883. This correspondence (c.1876-c.1881) was created by clerks within the Treasurers Office (VA 865) who were providing secretarial support to parliamentary Boards of Enquiry and Royal Commissions. It would seem that a Mr E J Thomas, the author of this series of correspondence from Treasurers Office, later became Secretary to the Premier and re-used Unit 1 to record another correspondence series.

This series was previously registered with the title Letter Books.

  • Recordkeeping System
Entries in each unit are arranged in chronological order by the date of each letter.

The vast majority of items of outward correspondence in this series are not registered, although some of the correspondence from Treasurers Office (eg, re Board of Enquiry on the Mines Department) uses an annual single numbering system.

There is an index at the front of each unit, which indexes entries by surname of recipient or by subject and gives the relevant page number.
