This series consists of general correspondence created or received by the Port of Portland Authority (VA 1427).
Recordkeeping System
The items of correspondence that make up this series were located by staff of the Authority when it was abolished and records prepared for transfer to archives. It appears that these papers should have been placed on either of the two major correspondence systems which operated within the Authority between 1950 and 1997. The correspondence series are VPRS 11854 General Correspondence Subject Files and VPRS 11907 General Correspondence Files, Alpha-Numeric System. It is not known why these papers were not placed on files in these series.
For the period 1955-71 outward correspondence was arranged in an annual single number system (VPRS 11908 Outward Correspondence, Annual Single Number System) and from 1972-92 was arranged in alphabetical order by name of correspondent (VPRS 11909 Outward Correspondence, Alphabetical Order by Name of Correspondent). It is unclear whether outward correspondence for the period 1992 to 1996 was maintained, and at the time of transfer had not been located.
