System of Arrangement/Control
Chronological
Series consists of two volumes summarising information regarding inquests heard by the Melbourne Coroner. Although the date range is 1858-1897 no volumes have been located for the period 1861-1896. Entries detail the name, age and occupation of the deceased, the dates of death and receipt of information by the Coroner, the date and place of inquest and the medical cause of death and a summary of the inquest verdict.
Entries are arranged in chronological order by date of inquest. The volume in the P1 consignment also contains (in the place of inquest column) a case number consisting of an annual single number and a number detailing the month of the year. No controlling record has been located. Those numbers also do not control the Inquest Deposition Files in VPRS 24. VPRS 7659 Record of Melbourne Inquest Book is probably the subsequent series. Entries in this series detail slightly different information but are arranged according to an annual single number system and are controlled by a series of indexes (VPRS 7660). These indexes commence in 1901 so this series should terminate some time before that.
