  • How to use the Records
    Consult the Records Description List for the series and call up the records using the unit number shown. There are no control records for this series.

  • Function / Content
    The returns record traffic counts made in the Prahran region during March 1947. The counts were undertaken at half hourly intervals between 6.30 am and 6.30 pm. Sub-totals are recorded for: cars and taxis; light trucks; heavy trucks; buses and coaches; motor cycles; bicycles; and horse-drawn vehicles. Overall totals are also shown. The counters name is recorded on the return.

    The full extent of the census, and its purpose, has not been researched.

  • Recordkeeping System
    There are no control records for this series. Returns are arranged in bundles by survey point the intersection or section of road at which counts were undertaken. Each point takes in 2 or 3 counts. For example, point 17 includes counts made for traffic moving from Toorak Road West to Toorak Road East; Toorak Road West to Chapel Street North; and Toorak Road West to Chapel Street South. The order of the bundles appears to be ad-hoc.
