How to use the Records
Correspondence is arranged in chronological order by date of receipt. Consult the relevant date range within the series to find record required.
Function / Content
Public health was attributed to the portfolio of Chief Secretary from 1855 1890. The Health Act 1889 established the Board of Public Health, replacing which replaced the Central Board of Health. The Board was established with the primary purpose developing policy with regard to the Act, with a particular focus on key areas such as housing, maternal and child welfare, infectious diseases, hospitals, offensive trades and pollution, sewerage, and animal domestication.
Section 7 of the Act required municipal districts to nominate a representative for one of the seven regional health divisions within Victoria.
This series contains application letters from individuals within the public service - namely town clerks/shire presidents, to the Department of the Chief Secretary nominating to represent one of the seven regional health divisions on the Board.
Recordkeeping System
All correspondence is arranged chronologically in order of its receipt at the Chief Secretarys Department. No file numbers were added to these items of correspondence. The series was not registered as part of VPRS 3992 Inward Registered Correspondence Part III, and there are no control records extant.
