This index was used to facilitate retrieval of correspondence files filed in VPRS 13181 General Correspondence Files, Annual Single Number System, Estate Office/Property Group and in VPRS 13263 General Correspondence Files, Freight Services Branch.
The information recorded includes:
- File reference number, year with EO prefix (until 1971) and PS prefix (from 1972 to 1976),
- Correspondence registration number, (year and the fraction number), the top number refers to Secretary's inward correspondence registration number, (VPRS 421) and the number below refers to Way and Works Branch registration number, (VPRS 12748),
- Comments, (eg., maintenance, agreements, extension of sidings) and,
- Private sidings number (It appears that each siding was given a number).
