    Function

This series was created by VA 2889 Registrar-General's Department to control all inquest deposition files held in custody. Although the files were created by the various coroners courts, registration and storage was the responsibility of the Registrar-General during the period c1856 to 1988. Earlier files dating from 1840 were included in the registration process believed to have begun in 1856.

Inquest numbers were allocated by means of an annual single number system.

    Contents

These registers record that allocation in file number order. As inquest deposition files pertaining to males and females were filed in two separate sequences, separate registers based on the gender of the deceased were created. Entries in these volumes note the name, profession and age of the deceased, the cause and particulars of death, the date of inquest, presiding coroner and coronial district, remarks, date of receipt of the file and the inquest number.

Related Records, VPRS 23 Index to Inquest Deposition Files

Information found in these registers was incorporated into the first of four consolidated indexes spanning the years 1840 to 1903 (unit 1 of VPRS 23) which were created by the Office of the Registrar-General (VA 862) probably during a major indexing program during 1908 to 1910.

These registers appear to have been created to control files for the period 1840 to 1861 only. Alphabetical indexes dating from 1862 which also appear to have performed the registry function have been identified and registered as VPRS 23 Index to Inquest Deposition Files.
