How to use the Records
Consult Consignment Details for the volume containing the date range for which information is required.
For correspondence from a specific person or office, browse the alphabetical section within the volume corresponding with the name.
Function / Content
This series was maintained in the Mallee Division of the Occupation Branch of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey after 1896. It registers correspondence received relating to the administration and application of the Mallee Land Acts.
Registrations consisted of the registered number, the dates of the letter and of the entry, the name and address of the correspondent, a summary of the subject of the letter and how it was dealt with. This last entry was most usually the number of the file to which the piece of correspondence was attached or a reference to a District Land Office. There may be within a registration, notations of the numbers of other pieces of correspondence recived on the same subject denoted by a letter and a number.
Recordkeeping System
The first unit of this series has entries made in chronological order using sequential numbers. Subsequent registers reverted to the alpha-numeric system.
Within the sequentially numbered register, divisions were made into alphabetical sections determined by the name of the correspondent. Thus, not all numbers within a register were allocated. Changes to a new volume were made when one or more of these alphabetical sections had been filled.
