How to use the Records
Refer to the list to select the unit containing the rates and valuation cards for required ward.
Function / Content
The cards within this series record valuations made by the City of Melbourne on rateable properties within various wards. The entries are arranged by property number. Each card details the valuation made in given years for a particular property.
Under the Local Government Act, Councils are required to cause a valuation of all rateable property. The initial valuation must take place no less than three months after the constitution of the municipality with subsequent valuations occurring from time to time as determined by the Council. Under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1958 a valuation must be held at least once within the six years following the previous one.
The Local Government (Amendment) Act 1959 provided for the return of valuations in the form of a series of numbered cards of loose sheets.
The cards in this series have the following details: property number, ward, street name/number, description of property, owner, site value, capital improved value, net annual value, date of assessment, assessment receipt number, special rate (current and arrears), town rate (current and arrears), balance and interest.
Recordkeeping System
The Rates and Valuations Card system records valuations made by the City of Melbourne on all rateable properties. The cards are filed according to wards, and then arranged by property number. The property number order typically corresponds to the street name order (alphabetical). Each card details the valuation made in given years for a particular property.
Some series of cards do have an attached index which lists the street name and its related property number (prefix only)
The combination of letters and numbers in the control symbols denotes the property number. The property number order typically corresponds to the street name order (alphabetical).
