How to use the Records
Use this series to obtain the title application number necessary to locate the relevant file in VPRS 460 Applications for Certificates of Title and the summary record in VPRS 405 Register of Applications for Certificates of Tiles.
To locate a name, request the volume that covers the period in which the application is likely to have been made. Names are arranged in strict alphabetical order within each volume.
Researchers wishing to access entries by surname (after 10 February 1904) or by location will need to consult charts and other finding aids at the Office of the Registrar General and the Office of Titles. There may also be references to application numbers marked on certificates of title.
Function / Content
This series consists of the index to applications for certificates of title for land, alienated from the Crown prior to 2 October 1862. From that date the Real Property Act 1862 (25 VIC., No.140) introduced the Torrens System of Land Registration. The Torrens System provided that a single authoritative certificate of title which proved ownership of land would replace the earlier, cumbersome, old law system. Owners of land alienated prior to 2 October 1862 could apply to have a certificate of title issued. For further information regarding this process, refer to the series description for VPRS 405 or 460.
The volumes in this series (as of May 2011) index the names of all applicants who made application in the period post 2 October 1862 until 10 February 1904.
Entries record only the surname and christian name of the applicant and the application number. No other information pertaining to the application is recorded.
Recordkeeping System
As the names within each index have been entered in lexicographical (ie strict alphabetical) order by surname, it has been concluded that each of the the three volumes currently in this series was created at different periods of time. Years of creation appear to be 1885 (encompassing all applications between October 1862 and April 1885), 1891 (containing all applications between April 1885 and 5 December 1891) and 1904 (all applications for the period 5 December 1891 - 10 February 1904).
Volumes were also allocated a sequential volume number which is visible on the spine.
The existence of other volumes of indexes is currently unknown.
