Description of this Series
Description of this Series
How to use the Records
Refer to the index (arranged alphabetically by surname of employee) located in units 1 and 3 of the P1 consignment and unit 1 of the P2 consignment. The index provides the folio number of the page on which the information on the appointment of individuals employed at the Victorian Government Printing Office is recorded.
As unit 2 of the P1 consignment does not contain an index, researchers should search the register, which is arranged chronologically by month of appointment.
Function / Content
This series comprises employment registers that were maintained by the Victorian Government Printing Office (VGPO) (VA 1035) to keep a record of its staff from 1879 to 1956.
Information commonly recorded in each volume includes:
* Employee's name
* Date of Birth
* How employed (position)
* Date(s) employed
* Date dispensed with
* Remarks, recording how the staff ceased employment at the VGPO, e.g., retired, retrenched, resigned, transferred.
Unit 1 of the P1 consignment was apparently created to record the employment of a particular class of employee, e.g., compositors with the VGPO from 1879 to 1945. The register records the status of each employee, i.e., on time or on piece, rather than date of birth.
Unit 2 was created to record who commenced employment with the VGPO each month from 1911 to 1956. The register records wages paid rather than the date dispensed with.
Unit 3 was created to record applications for employment at the VGPO from 1919 to 1929.
Additional information recorded in this volume included:
* Address of applicant
* Date of application
* Remarks, such as returned soldier, marital status, recommendations or referees, age, and previous employment experience.
Applications for employment at the Canberra GPO were also included at the back of this volume. Information includes name, position applied for and application number.
Unit 1 of the P2 consignment was created to record the employment of people in all positions with the VGPO from 1898 to 1951.
Recordkeeping System
Information in units 1and 3 of the P1 consignment and unit 1 of the P2 consignment is arranged chronologically by date of first appointment of each person employed at the VGPO. The index in the front of the volumes refers to the folio number of the page on which the information for a particular employee is recorded.
The index in unit 3 of the P1 consignment is arranged in strict alphabetical order. The index includes an alpha prefix to the folio number and records the type of position applied for i.e compositor, reader, or typist.
Unit 2 of the P1 consignment does not contain an index. Information was recorded chronologically by month of employment and in alphabetical order by surname within each month.
