How to use the Records
Please note: The use of this index in the Reading Room, to retrieve Inquest Deposition Files, has been superseded by an electronic database.
VPRS 24 Inquest Deposition Files were arranged in annual single number order. The Coroners Court created an index to facilitate retrieval of the files (VPRS 23). It is this index that has been filmed.
The index is arranged in alphabetical order by surname and in chronological order, at times for a range of years, and at other times for single years.
Researchers referred to the index or microfilm for the date in which they are interested, find the name of the deceased, and note the year and file number. Using this information the inquest file in VPRS 24 may be retrieved.
Function / Content
The index was created by the Coroners Court to facilitate the retrieval of the deposition files which were filed in annual single number order. The original index consisted of a number of volumes (VPRS 23). The volumes were microfilmed in order to preserve the original records. The index on microfilm was then made available to researchers at the Public Record Office Victoria.
Recordkeeping System
The index on microfilm is arranged in numerical order by number of the reel. The reels are arranged in chronological order reflecting the original order of the indexes.
