Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records

  • Function / Content
Indexes containing brief subject descriptions and registration numbers allocated to correspondence registered by the Attorney-General's Department. The correspondence indexed is located in VPRS 266. To locate an item in VPRS 266 the Registers of Inward Correspondence (VPRS 251) should be consulted first to determine whether a particular item was attached to subsequent items received on the same subject.

  • Recordkeeping System
This series is arranged chronologically by year with each volume arranged alphabetically according to subject heading. Entries are arranged in chronological (ie. registration number) order within each subject heading. Headings generally reflect the source or type of correspondence including: other Government agencies and officials, geographical locations (including all relevant legal officials from that location such as Courts, Coroners and Clerks of the Peace), functional headings (such as banks, lotteries, opinions etc) and a general section for each letter of the alphabet which is usually used for items from individuals. An index of headings is found on the first pages of most volumes.

Markings denoting a file name and number which are found within the front cover of most volumes appear to relate to larger files which were seemingly filed in a physically separate area.

This series ended in 1954 when the use of registers was discontinued in favour of subject based registry cards (VPRS 7739).

    P2 Consignment

This consignment comprises the index for the year 1916. It was recorded as missing at the time of the transfer of the original consignment in 1984. The volume was found during 1992 in a storage cage controlled by VA 862 Office of the Registrar General and Office of Titles. As this cage borders the cage controlled by the Attorney General's Department in which all remaining volumes of this series were located, it is assumed that this volume was placed in the wrong cage at some time prior to the 1984 transfer.
