Function / Content
This series contains inward registered correspondence to the Superintendent of the Port Phillip District from W Thomas, Guardian of Aborigines and E S Parker, Assistant Protector of Aborigines, North Western District.
Parker's correspondence is exclusively concerned with the Loddon River Aboriginal Station. Subjects include his relinquishing charge of the station, requisitions, appointments and allowances.
Thomas' correspondence consists mainly of weekly and monthly reports which provide a comprehensive daily account of his activities as the Guardian of Aborigines for this period.
The correspondence consists of blue folders and single pages. The face page has written upon it the date of registration and the registration number. On some letters, "Aboriginal" is written in red ink across the top left hand corner.
While the correspondence contained in VPRS 2893 was originally registered and received in the Superintendent's Office, it would appear that it was transferred to the Surveyor-General's Office after that office took over the Aboriginal function in 1856.
Thomas' reports and correspondence as Assistant Protector of Aborigines can be found in VPRS 10, VPRS 19 and VPRS 4410. His reports and correspondence as Guardian of the Aborigines for the period 1852 - 1855 are missing although the odd report and letter for this period may be found in VPRS 1189. Reports and correspondence for the period 1856 - 1860 can be located in VPRS 2896 and VPRS 44. During the period that VPRS 1893 covers any correspondence relating to the land aspect of the administration of aborigines was registered by the Land Branch of the Superintendent's Office.
Recordkeeping System
Each letter has an annual single number registration. This number was allocated and controlled by a separate Inward Correspondence Register. This register is to be found in Unit 6 of VPRS 45 Draft Letter Books. It would appear to have been placed here to utilise unused stationery.
