Researchers should use VPRS 6920 Microfilm Copy of Inward Correspondence Register. It can be viewed in PROV's North Melbourne and Ballarat Reading Rooms.
Function / Content
This series consists of the register for the correspondence received by Captain W Lonsdale, the Police Magistrate of the Port Phillip District, mainly from the Colonial Secretary and other government officials in Sydney, but also from local private persons.
Details given are the progressive number given the piece of correspondence, the date, from whom the letter was received, a summary of the subject of the correspondence and whether it had been filed. Correspondence deals with, in 36/1, the instructions for the formation of the settlement and then with the administration of the new colony and the establishment of government services.
A separate register or listing in the volume is of "Papers without any date or year ..". These have been given a running number and are listed primarily by subject, although some of these papers were obviously from private persons with requests or representations. Matters dealt with include plans for public infrastructure, draft resolutions, minutes of meetings, reports and petitions.
Recordkeeping System
In the main register, each piece of correspondence has been given an annual single number. Papers listed in the supplementary register are given a consecutive number.
