Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Researchers will generally refer to the microfiche VPRS 3340/P2 which is commonly known as the Probate Index, Victoria.

The series is arranged chronologically over particular time spans and entries were made in alphabetical order by surname within these subdivisions. Entries may not be in strict alphabetical order, but rather researchers will need to scan the alphabetical section for the surname they are seeking.

    1841-1969

    1. Note the (Probate) series and (file) number in the left-hand column for the person in whose probate and/or will, etc., you are interested.

    2. These numbers are used to retrieve the probate files and wills at the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV).

    3. They may be entered on the Probate database in the Search Room to identify PROV series, consignment and unit numbers required to call up files.

    1970-1992 (to file 1051/145)

    1. On the fiche, identify the name of the person in whose probate and/or will, etc., you are interested. Note the (Probate) series and (file) number, the PROV series, consignment and unit numbers in the right-hand columns on the fiche.

    2. Use these numbers to retrieve the probate file.

To retrieve the will, when appropriate, refer to the Records Description Lists for VPRS 7591 Wills using the (Probate) series and (file) number.

    4 March -31 December 1992 (post file 1051/145)

    1. On the fiche, identify the name of the person in whose probate and/or will, etc., you are interested. Note the (Probate) series and (file) number, the PROV series, consignment and unit numbers in the right-hand columns on the fiche.

    2. Use these numbers to retrieve the probate file (that is, probate and will if applicable).

From 4 March 1992, when flat files (rather than folded) were introduced in the Probate Office, wills and probate files were kept together and transferred to the Public Record Office Victoria in VPRS 28 Probate and Administration Files. The last will filed in VPRS 7591/P18 is 1051/145 (year 1992).

  • Function / Content
This series is a microfilm copy of the Probate Index used by the Probate Office to gain access to Probate and Administration files and Wills created between 1841 and 1959.

The Index was compiled from various sources including VPRS 262 Index to Probates and Administrations Issued. As at 1994 the original of the Probate Index remains in the custody of the Registrar of Probate.

It is understood from information in the introduction to the microfiche that the Probate Office maintained a paper-based index until 1989. A computer-based index was introduced in 1990. (VPRS 3340/P2, microfiche 1, page 24.)

    P2 Consignment

The index on microfilm, VPRS 3340/P1, has been effectively superseded by the index on microfiche known as Probate Index, Victoria (1841-1992), VPRS 3340/P2. Copies of this Index are available for reference in Public Record Office Search Rooms.
