Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Indexes held at VicRoads at Kew for pre-1986 plans might indicate in which book survey details for a specific locality may be found.

  • Function / Content
The Country Roads Board had as its primary responsibility the construction, care and maintenance of the main roads of the state. It acquired further responsibilities for bridges and for specified types of roads (e.g. Developmental and Tourist). The Country Roads Board itself took responsibility for and carried out some construction whilst, for other projects, it worked in close association with municipal authorities. As part of this responsibility for construction, improvement and maintenance it was important that accurate survey data was gathered for the planning and carrying out of works.

Survey books are the work books taken out by surveyors into the field. Each page contains drawings, plots and/or annotations showing angles and distances from guide points and (in some cases) the outline and details of subdivisions and constructions thereon. Familiarity with survey techniques is necessary to make full use of these records.

The records in this series consist of consecutively numbered standard notebooks known as Level Books used by Country Roads Board surveyors in the field recording survey details relating to proposed activities. Most of these activities relate to road alignments, the acquisition of land for road constructions or the disposal of excess requirements of land. Each book has an index at the front indicating the location in which the measurements were taken and in some cases, an appropriate reference to the Survey Field Book (see VPRS 4045 Survey Field books). Recordings in these books were used in the drafting of the plans in VPRS 7389 Survey Plans.

  • Recordkeeping System
The books are consecutively numbered. The consecutive numbering is roughly in chronological order of use. An index at the front of each book records the location of the surveys recorded and, where appropriate, a cross reference to a book in VPRS 4045 Survey Field Books.
