    THIS SERIES INDEXES PART OF VPRS 567 MINING COMPANY REGISTRATION FILES

    The records are arranged sequentially by mining company registration number.

    Function/Contents

    This series consists of a register of mining company registration files which have become defunct. The record consists of pro-forma sheets entitled Department of Registrar-General Index to Defunct Mining Company Files. Entries are type-written, except for the last couple of forms which are hand-written.

    The record was obviously created from the mining company registration files themselves, not the Register of Mining Companies [VPRS 8273] as the pro-forma acts as an inventory of actual file contents. However the specific purpose of the record in the context of other related records such as the Register and Index [VPRS 8274] is not clear.

    Date Range

    The actual creation/compilation date of this record series is unknown. As the task of creating the record appears to have ceased mid-job (ie. the hand-written sheets have not been typed up) the deregistration dates of the records covered should not be taken as the exact start date of the series. However most of the company registrations covered appear to have become defunct by the late 1960s so it is possible to date the commencement of the series post this period. It is also not possible to be sure if the series actually ceased to be recorded or whether more records from this series are held by the agency.

    The contents date range of the series is 1871 to 1901, reflecting the chronological sequence of company registration.

    Related Records

    The original documentation for this series prepared in 1982, indicates that the Card Index to Mining Companies located in the Public Record Office Laverton Search Room was prepared by the Archives Division, State Library of Victoria [VA 2923] from this record. Though this is possible, it is important to note that the card index covers the entire date range of registration files created, 1871 to 1958 while this record only covers 1871 to early 1902. This throws some doubt on the theory that the card index was based solely on the contents of VPRS 4108. A microfilm of this card index was created contemporaneously and can be located in VPRS 125.
