How to use the Records
Researchers with a specific subject or searching for correspondence from a particular official or person should first consult the Indexes to Inwards Correspondence for the appropriate year/date range to identify the registration number of the correspondence. VPRS 427 is the Index to Inwards Correspondence for the years 1867-1871, and 1878-1956. Units 1-4 of VPRS 429 Registers of Inward Correspondence have alphabetical indexes sewn into the front of each unit.
For more detailed instructions on how to use the records, consult the series text for VPRS 425 Inward Registered Correspondence, Annual Single Number System.
Function / Content
This series consists of registers, which control the inward correspondence in VPRS 425. This series was used to allocate unique identification numbers (registration numbers) for each item of inward correspondence received, and to record summary details of the item, such as the sender, date received and subject. This series also records the chain of correspondence for each item received, by recording the registration numbers of subsequent items of correspondence.
Recordkeeping System
The entries in this series are arranged chronological order, by the date each item of inward correspondence was registered. The registration numbers were allocated sequentially, with the numbering sequence recommencing at 1 at the start of each year.
Entries in this series were indexed in VPRS 427 for the period 1867-1871, 1879-1956. The indexes for the period 1859-1866 can be found sewn into Units 1-4 of VPRS 429.
