Function / Content
The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744). In 1871, the Department of Railways and Roads (VA 2875) became the responsible agency.
This series consists of standard pro forma forwarded to the central office by District Road Engineers as part of their responsibility to assess and supervise the execution of contracts for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges throughout Victoria. The form gave a summary of the particular contract and comprehensive details of the total estimated to be complete at the date of the assessment. The contractor had, as well, to make a declaration that his employees had been paid in full. These returns provided the evidence for the processing of staged and final payments to the contractor as may be seen in VPRS 4662 Register of Accounts.
The returns in custody are related mainly to contracts in the Melbourne and the Gippsland Districts.
Recordkeeping System
Returns are filed in chronological order.
