How to use the Records
Refer to the consignment details and identify the register for the appropriate period.
Function / Content
This series consists of volumes detailing summary information about persons appointed Justices of the Peace. Entries detail the name, address and occupation of the Justice, date and age on appointment, the bailiwick (legal area) and court attended as presiding Magistrate. A remarks column also details particulars relating to deaths or resignations which occurred during the active use of the register.
Related Records
Documentation relating to a Justice's appointment may be found in other sources, notably VPRS 7744 Staff Appointment Books and the Victorian Government Gazette. Papers were also originally included in VPRS 266 Inward Registered Correpondence.
For information on persons nominated for appointment as the Justices of the Peace, refer to VPRS 16151 Justices of the Peace, Nomination Book
Recordkeeping System
P1 consignment:
Each individual register is arranged alphabetically by surname. Entries within each of the first four volumes in custody were initially made in strict alphabetical order recording all Justices current when the volume was commenced (1911, 1920, 1929 and 1936). Entries were then made chronologically as more Justices were subsequently appointed. Entries detail Justices appointed from C.1862 but may not include those who died or resigned prior to 1911.
The final volume in custody (unit 3 of the P1 consignment) which was begun in 1964 has entries arranged in strict alphabetical order.
P2 consignment:
The register in the P2 consignment recorded the postal address, date, bailiwick (legal area) and the JP's signature.
