    ** Access Conditions **

These records have been transferred to the Public Record Office Victoria under the condition that requests for access will be referred to the Clerk of the Legislative Council/Assembly for determination in each case. Applications should be made to the above officers and written approval must be presented at the Public Record Office Victoria reading rooms before the records will be made available for public inspection.

Consult the Consignment Details for the required unit number.

PROV has in custody other series consisting of outward correspondence from the Clerk of the Parliaments. Interested researchers can consult VPRS 5182 (1891-1914) or VPRS 5181 (1910-1912).

  • Function / Content
This series is the Memorandum Book of George William Rusden, who acted in the post of Clerk of the Parliaments from 1856-1882.

Along with copies of unregistered outward correspondence created by the clerk, this series also contains entries that document the exercise of his various duties as Clerk of the Parliaments. (For example, Rusden made dated entries when unbound Votes and Proceedings were delivered to the Government Printer, and itemised the distribution of bound volumes to various people and departments. He also was required to submit quarterly estimates to Treasury and the Chief Secretarys Office.) Occasionally, items of inward correspondence are copied into the Memorandum Book, usually before the copy of the Clerks reply to the same.

The Clerk also recorded other reference information in this series, such as addresses, and the correct form and wording for notices, certificates, etc.
