How to use the Records
The microfiche are arranged in chronological order. The Records Description List provides a detailed description of the content of each microfiche.
The date range of the documents on the fiche starts from 1837. Statistics for one year cannot be compiled until the following year.
Function / Content
It is understood that the original returns, estimates, etc., were submitted by the senior government official in the Port Phillip District to the Colonial Secretary of the Colony of New South Wales and may be in the custody of the Archives Authority of New South Wales. The series of correspondence files of the Police Magistrate of Port Phillip District (VA 472), the Superintendent (VA 473) or the Colonial Secretarys Office (VA 856) have not been researched for copies of these statistical returns by this archivist.
The statistics may have been used to chart the growth or decline of certain aspects of the early development of the Port Phillip District.
The set of microfiche that have been accessioned as the P consignment were transferred to the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Victoria for historical reasons. The PROV had that set of microfiche copied to make a set available to the public in the search room.
Recordkeeping System
The microfiche are arranged in chronological order. The fiche have been numbered sequentially in that order.
