How to use the Records
This series was used by the Country Roads Boars (later the Road Construction Authority) to show land ownership and certificate of title numbers in areas which the Board/Authority was interested. These charts are produced to help an Authority Surveyor in gathering the requisite information essential in the survey process for proposed Authority road constructions. Search charts are not essential for every survey conducted, but are produced generally for areas with rather complex land ownership patterns and usually for areas earmarked for freeway construction.
Each chart is in the form of a scale drawing of the survey area identifying the locations of the properties affected. Lists above the drawing detail the L.P. (Lodged Plan) number, allotment details, certificate of title numbers and the registered proprietor of each property. As some survey charts, linked by reference to the adjoining chart in the same manner as street directories. the survey plan number for the area is also noted.
Each chart is identified by a number allocated by the Authority. This is achieved by means of a block number allocation system which identifies all R.C.A. plans. The numbers initially allocated to search charts were 64,001 to 64,500 meaning that chart 64,001 is in effect the first chart produced. A new block of numbers will be allocated once the current allotment has been exhausted.
Some charts are, for varied reasons, subject to change. When such changes are required a completely new chart incorporating the change is drafted. This new chart is allocated the same search chart number, but an alphabetical suffix is attached to note that it has been changed. The letter utilised denotes the frequency of change. (i.e. A the First, B the second, etc).
Search charts numbers may be obtained from some of the plans in either VPRS 7390 Withdrawn Parish Plans or VPRS 7391 Withdrawn Township Plans which are in fact superseded indexes. As these indexes are constantly updated, the RCA in Denmark Street, Kew maintains the only total and accurate index and it is recommended that enquiries be referred there. Copies of both the search charts and survey plans can also be provided by the Authority.
