How to use the Records
This series consists of alphabetical indexes relating to deaths reported to the Melbourne Coroner whose subsequent investigation showed that the deceased died of natural causes. An inquest was not required to determine the cause of death in any of these cases. Entries record the name of the deceased and the date of death.
Summary information regarding the death will be located for most cases in VPRS 7662 Melbourne Admittance Books. The exception will be for those entries which are prefaced by an asterisk. These are cases where the coroner observed the deceased and made his decision at the place of death. As the body was not sent to the morgue, these cases are not entered in VPRS 7662.
No files exist for any person listed in these indexes. The exact medical cause of death may be determined from the entry in VPRS 7662 and will be found on the death certificate.
