How to use the Records
This series indexes files in VPRS 567 Mining Company Registration files by name of mining company. This series is in an extremely fragile state and, as such, is not available for public inspection. However, the information in the volume was transcribed into a card index. A MICROFILM COPY OF THE CARD INDEX (VPRS 125) IS AVAILABLE IN THE READING ROOM.
Information in this index is arranged lexicographically and alphabetically by mining company name. Please see below for more information about the various indexing systems and the periods they cover.
Function / Content
This series indexes mining company registration files. The index gives name of company, its place of operation, and the mining company registration number. For more information re the mining company registration function, the registration process and related mining company registration records see VPRS 567 Mining Company Registration Files and VPRS 8273 Register of Mining Companies.
Recordkeeping System
This record consists of three distinct indexes, each created at separate times. Each alphabetical section contains the three distinct index sections.
The first of these is lexicographical (ie. entries are arranged in "pure" alphabetic sequence as they would appear in a dictionary) and covers companies registered between 1871 and 1905 (registration nos.1 to c.7500). It must have been created in or around 1905.
The second index section is also lexicographical and appears to have been created in or around c.1916-1917 and covers files registered in the period c.1905 to c.1916-1917. (registration nos. c.7500 to c.9000).
The third index section in each alpha section is not lexicographical, ie. the entries starting with the same letter are merely added as they occur. This section appears to cover companies registered between c.1917 and 1958. (registration numbers c.9000-10518).
Researchers who do not know the date of registration of a mining company should check in each of these index sections for the alphabetical section relevant to the name of their company.
