    How to Use This Series

    Plans are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the parish. Multiple plans for the same parish are numbered consecutively and accessed by a Key Sheet.

    Function/Content

    Parish and Township Record Plans and Working Plans

    Administration of land settlement in Victoria has been based on the division of the State into a number of geographical areas. The largest areas are called counties and these are in turn made up of smaller areas called parishes. In high density settlements there are also townships within parishes. In Victoria there are 2004 Parishes and 909 Townships, which are part of 37 Counties.

    A plan was produced for each parish and township to show the boundaries of lands which were occupied, reserved or sold. Two separate plan collections were maintained. The Manuscript or Record Plans are legal documents showing the status of the land over time. On these plans Crown Land subdivisions, land settlement and tenure, reservations and Crown Land dealings are charted. The information that is recorded on the plans forms the basis of the current cadastral (taxable property) boundaries. Working Plans (or OB Plans) were maintained to record day to day land administration business.

    The Manuscript Plan collection comprises two parts: the current record plans and the put away plans. Current plans are those which are kept up-to-date. Put away plans are those which have been superseded.

    This Series

    This series comprises a microfiche reference copy of current Manuscript Parish Plans (VPRS 8286). It is believed the microfiche were produced from circa 1950.

    Information on the plans include:
    property boundaries;
    name of the original person who bought the land from the Crown;
    section of the Land Act under which the application for selection of land was made;
    number of the application for the selection of land;
    size of the land (in Imperial measurements - acres, roods, perches);
    Crown description of the land (Section and allotment number of the property);
    Government roads.

    System of Arrangement and Control

    The plans are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the parish.

    In cases where there is more than one Manuscript Plan for a parish a Key Sheet was created. The Key Sheet shows the whole parish and identifies which areas correspond to additional numbered plans. This practice enabled the information on plans of large or densely settled parishes to be magnified for easier use.

    The plans can be used to access files relating to land alienation and reservation. For a detailed explanation of Victoria's land settlement records and a guide to how to use the Manuscript Plans to access the Department of Crown Lands and Survey files refer to the following publications:

    Peter Cabena, Lands Manual; and
    Public Record Office, Guide to the Lands Records.

    Both are available at the Reference Desk at the Laverton and City Search Rooms.

    Note that some parishes in remote areas have no parish plan. In these cases the County Plan is the Record Plan for the Parish. Also note that manuscript Township Plans have been maintained separately (refer to the microfiche copy VPRS 8289).
