  • How to use the Records
This series was created to register the miscellaneous conveyancing files of the Crown Solicitor. (The Crown Solicitor also maintained separate crown purchase registers for the conveyancing files of the Country Roads Board (VPRS 8325), Electricity Commission (VPRS 8326), Water Supply (VPRS 8327, 8328) and State Schools (VPRS 8329, 8330).

These registers are arranged in rough chronological order. All registers have an alphabetical index at the front of each volume to allow access by name of the parties involved or by date.

Each crown purchase is registered with the following details: date of instrument, vendor(s), person to whom conveyed, nature of instrument: conveyance, surrender, feoffment or certificate of title, price, situation of land in County, Parish and Allotment and size in acres, roods and perches.

Possibly because of the small number of conveyances in the earliest years the first Crown Purchase Register also provides an index to surrenders, settlements in pursuance of various appropriation acts, land set aside for roads and miscellaneous deeds. The files to which this volume refers have not been located but it is fair to assume that the reference to "land set aside for roads" would be previous files to those files registered in VPRS 8325 Crown Purchases Registers: Country Roads Board. As the files have not been located this is not certain.

The last register of this series is also the first register in the subsequent series (VPRS 8324) because from 13 January 1922 the files begin to be numbered sequentially from 1 and the date of instrument column records the sequential numbers from this point. The first and second volumes overlap between 1911 - 1915 and it appears as though 2 registers were being used simultaneously. As mentioned above, even though the files appear to have been arranged chronologically they were not strictly recorded in this fashion and for the period 1911-1915 crown purchases appear to have been recorded at random in the two volumes. It is thus necessary to consult the alphabetical index in both volumes to discover the details of a particular crown purchase.
