  • How to use the Records
    Function/Contents

    The Board of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (M.M.B.W.) was established by Act in 1890 and came into operation in 1891. The Board Minutes date from 18 March 1891 and continue to July 1992. M.M.B.W. became Melbourne Water with the proclamation of the Melbourne Water Act in July 1992. M.M.B.W. traded as Melbourne Water from 1 September 1991.

    These volumes were kept as an `archival set' by the M.M.B.W. archives unit at its Mill Park Repository until they were transferred to PRO custody. At that time, the series comprised 190 volumes. A further 22 volumes were added (in December 1992 and January 1993) from a duplicate set held by the State Library of Victoria.

    System of Arrangement and Control

    The 212 volumes in this series are numbered. They are arranged chronologically by the dates of the entries in the volumes. Volumes 84 to 87 are in a single volume. Accordingly, on the Record Description List volume numbers correspond to Unit numbers up to vol. 84 (unit 84). Thereafter, the volume number is lower than the unit number, e.g.

    vol. 88 = unit 85
    .......................................
    vol. 215 = unit 212

    There is continuous pagination until the end of volume 38 (page 12991).

    Notice Papers for Board meetings are found (together with the minutes of the previous meeting and printed reports) in VPRS 8609/P2 up until 30June1916.

    The "Index to Board Minutes" (VPRS 8609/P19) contains handwritten entries in alphabetical order (subjects and names) with references to numbers which do not correspond to any observable reference in VPRS 8598. What relationship (if any) exists between VPRS 8609/P19 and VPRS 8598 has not been determined
