  • How to use the Records
    Function/Contents

This series consists of a record of daily distribution of prisoners at the prison farm.

The record of the daily distribution of the prisoners consists of monthly tables of the total number of prisoners who have been undertaking various tasks, have been sick or have been unemployed. The table also indicates the number of prisoners received or discharged. Grand totals are also calculated for each day and for each month. Daily averages of prisoners are also recorded for each month.

Other details such as escapes, recaptures, paroles, remissions, court, medical, reclassification and discipline are also recorded against prisoners' names with increasing frequency after circa 1960.

    Column headings include:

    Day of month
    Boatmen
    Piggery
    Poultrymen
    Stablemen
    Dairymen
    Gardeners
    Laundrymen
    Bushgang

    Grand Total

    System of Arrangement/Control

The monthly tables are arranged in chronological order, the entries within each table are arranged chronologically by date across columns for type of work undertaken.

This series was located in the Context Control area of the Laverton Repository and registered as part of the 1993 Stocktake Week Estray Project. The record was apparently handed to the Manuscripts Librarian at the State Library by a Mr Jack Dihm and then passed on to the Public Record Office by the Manuscripts Librarian (date unknown).

    Access status

Following a telephone conversation with Mr. Joe Eftermeyer, FOI and Records Manager, Office of Corrections, it has been decided to place this series on open access. Mr Eftermeyer indicated that he did not think he would be able to recommend closure of this record to his Minister as the information in the record about prisoners (their surnames and sometimes an initial) was relatively innocuous as it did not allow an individual to be positively identified, and as such should not be withheld from public access.
