How to use the Records
Consult the consignment details for the date range required. For information relating to specific localities, Units 1 and 2 have an alphabetical index of these at the front of the volumes.
Function / Content
This series consists of the Minutes of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744) when dealing with matters concerned with Public Works as administered by the Department of Public Works (VA 669). The usual membership of the Board was four, consisting of the President, the Surveyor-General, the Commissioner (later the Inspector-General) of Public Works and the Commissioner for Roads and Bridges. Two members constituted a quorum for meetings.
The matters regularly dealt with by the Board were the determination of the award of tenders for the construction, maintenance, fitting and furnishing of public buildings, the approval of requisitions listed with running number, details and amount and the sealing of contracts.
The keeping of a Minute Book ceased in 1874. A note in the final volume stated that:
Duplicate Schedules commenced from Jan 1, 1874 one of which is kept at Lands Office this it is decided has rendered any Minute Book unnecessary.
Recordkeeping System
Minutes are entered in chronological order of the holding of meetings. Units 1 and 2 have alphabetical indexes to localities mentioned in the Minutes with the folio (or Page) reference.
