Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
Access to the records in this Series is either through the microfilm copy or via digital images. Due to the historical value of the records, access to the physical originals is closed.

The microfilm copy of the P0 consignment of this Series can also be accessed in PROV Reading Rooms as Reel 1 of VPRS 6888 Kelly Historical Collection [Microfilm Copies of VPRS 4965, 4966, 4967, 4968, 4969].

Both hard copy consignments of this series (ie the P0 and P2 consignments) have been digitised and are available online. Access to the digitised records is available via the physical records details pages.

  • Function / Content
This series contains police correspondence, reports and statements in relation to the search for the Kelly gang, directives and reports regarding the disposition of the police force, and other police documents relating to the trial of Kelly and proceedings against various members of the Kelly gang. It would appear that the original file order and file construction has been completely removed. All papers have been detached and without lengthy investigations, the original order is possibly lost.

  • Recordkeeping System
The original records are held in the P0 and P2 consignments of this series, and are arranged in an imposed order, which is roughly chronological as held since their transfer to the archives. Individual items have been placed in folders which have been numbered sequentially by the archivists responsible for their listing.

It is believed that the records in the P0 consignmnet were transferred into archival custody in circa 1970. The records in the P2 consignment were discovered unlisted within unit 41 of VPRS 807 and were arranged by PROV and digitised during 2010. It is believed that all of the records in these consignments were created by the Police within a number of chronologically arranged bundles pertaining to Kelly which was originally managed within VPRS 937.

Three sets of copies of these records have been created by PROV. In all instances, these copies retain the folder order imposed by the archives via the folders.

A microfilm copy of these records was created in the early 1980's for use in PROV Reading Rooms, which is located in VPRS 6888 Kelly Historical Collection [Microfilm Copies of VPRS 4965, 4966, 4967, 4968, 4969]. VPRS 4965 contains low-resolution, digitised copies of records held within that series, which can be accessed online via the physical records details pages. High-resolution copies are located in VPRS 15054 Kelly Historical Collection: Part 1 Police Branch [Digitised Series - Archival Quality Master]
