This series consists of the "The Life Assurance Companies Register Book" specified to be kept by the Registrar-General (later the Registrar-General of Companies) under Section 5 of the Life Assurance Companies Act 1873 and subsequent legislation. All companies involved in selling life assurance were required to be registered with the Registrar-General under Section 6 of that Act.
Specifically this series records:
the number allocated to each registered life assurance company, and
the receipt and filing of all documents received from and placed upon each company's registration file.
None of the life assurance company registration files controlled by these registers are in PRO custody.
Contents
Each folio (or page) within these registers is sequentially numbered. Detail pertaining to each individual company is usually recorded on a single page or folio. The number of the page is the registered life assurance company number. For some reason, not every page in the register was utilised thus resulting in gaps in the numbering sequence.
The receipt of documents from a company is entered on that company's page. These entries detail:
date of document
date of registration of document
description of the document
sequential number allocated to document as placed within the relevant file.
Pages may also be annotated with details of the publication of Government Gazette notices pertaining to the dissolution of the company and the cancellation of the registration.
If all available space on a page(s) was filled, subsequent entries were usually recorded on another page(s) within the same register and then the next available vacant page or folio. The complete record of documents received from a given company could thus be spread across a number of separate pages which are all cross referenced. The registered life assurance company number does not change in these instances.
The second volume of the P1 consignment appears to have functioned as a continuation volume for companies originally registered in the first volume. Entries are scattered throughout the pages of this volume.
Indexes
No indexes created as part of the original record keeping system have been located or identified.
End of Series
It appears that no further life assurance companies were registered in these volumes after 1928 although detail continued to be added to entries until 1947. it is uncertain how new life assurance companies were registered after 1928.
