  • How to use the Records
    This series has been digitised and is available online. Access to the digitised records is available via the physical records details pages.

    As there is no index, researchers will need to browse through the volume to locate subjects of interest. Information in the volume has been gathered in the course of carrying out the duties of a police magistrate in the mid-nineteenth century.

  • Function / Content
    This series consists of a volume created by the Portland Police Magistrate (VA 4730) to assist with the performance of their duties. Information recorded in the volume includes police salaries, sheriffs' salaries, various financial notations, Register of Arms, lists of Tickets of Leave Holders, lists of certificates granted to authorise licenses under the Public House Act, List of Recognizances, publican's licences and other assorted lists and registers created as a result of the performance of assorted Police Magistrate duties. Details recorded in the volume may include names and places of residence, occupation, salary, public house name, and number of handcuffs, leg irons, bayonets &c returned to or requisitioned by the Portland Magistrate.

  • Recordkeeping System
    Entries in the book were made by the magistrate as various duties were performed on a day-to-day basis. The various lists are scattered throughout the volume. There is no index to assist with the location of similar information systematically. Entries appear to be in rough chronological order.
