- Function / Content
This series comprises unregistered inward correspondence to the Chief Protector of Aborigines, G. A. Robinson. This series covers all aspects relative to the administration of Aborigines and daily life on the Aboriginal Reserves/Stations. The majority of correspondence is from Assistant Protectors, namely, Thomas, Parker, Le Souef, Dredge and Sievwright and medical Officers/Dispensers attached to the Reserves: Campbell, Baylie, Jones, Horsburgh, Watton and Allen. There is some correspondence from La Trobe and private citizens.
The correspondence covers a wide variety of subjects including: daily administration of the Protectorate system (appointments, dismissals, requisitions &c); crime by Aborigines; crime against Aborigines by white settlers, Koori health, Native Police Corps and movements of Aboriginal Tribes.
Research Note:
Researchers are advised to use VPRS 11 in conjunction with VPRS 19 Inward Registered Correspondence, VPRS 10 Registered Inward Correspondence to the Superintendent of Port Phillip District relating to Aboriginal Affairs and VPRS 4410 Aboriginal Protectorate Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly and Annual Reports and Journals as these series contain much additional information on various subjects raised in VPRS 11.
- Recordkeeping System
This series was arranged artificially by the archivist as the original order was unknown.
Files have been arranged alphabetically by sender, and then chronologically.
Three sets of copies of these records have been created by PROV. A microfilm copy of these records was created for use in PROV Reading Rooms, which is located in VRPS 4467 Aboriginal Affairs Records (Microfilm Copy of VPRS 4409, 10, 11, 4410, 12, 2895, 4399, 4397 4398, 4466, 4412, 4414, 4465, 2897, 2893, 2894, 2896, 4411, 4415, and 6760). As at October 2005, a digitisation project is underway. Once completed, low resolution digitised copies of VPRS 11 Unregistered Inward Correspondence to the Chief Protector of Aborigines - Reports and Returns will also be held within this series, and be accessible online via the physical records details pages. High-resolution copies will be located in VPRS 15068 Unregistered Inward Correspondence to the Chief Protector of Aborigines - Reports and Returns [Digitised Series - Archival Quality Master].
