How to use the Records
Locate the relevant part of the volume containing either the Register of Burials (first four folios) or the Minutes (commencing 37 folios into the volume).
Function / Content
This series consists of a single volume that contains the Register of Burials and the Minutes of Meetings conducted by the Welchman's Reef Cemetery Trust.
The volume was originally intended to function solely as the Register of Burials, although only the first four folios are used for this purpose. These folios contain a total of 101 entries. Information in this part of the volume records an entry number, name, birthplace, sex, and occasionally the age and religion of the individual who was buried. The remaining information is recorded only within certain time periods or infrequently; plot number, an indication of whether an existing ("old") or new plot was used, whether the plot had been paid for or was free and the date of burial. The date of burial is provided for only a handful of the first 55 entries; the earliest date recorded is March 1872. The last burial date recorded is November 19 1952. A loose page found within the front cover lists some of the individuals identified in the volume.
The minutes commence after a gap of 33 folios. They record details of meetings held with varying levels of frequency between September 1889 and 1937. A note that records the membership of the Trust in January 1943 follows the final minute.
Minutes created between 1931 and 1937 are interspersed with finance detail. Similar notations are recorded in three folios towards the end of the volume and span the earlier period 1895-1930.
Recordkeeping System
There is no index to this volume and there are no page numbers. Entries in the Register of Burials are made in entry number order that appears to reflect the order in which the individuals were buried. The minutes are arranged in chronological order.
