Description of this Series
Description of this Series
How to use the Records
There is no available index for the Exchange Teacher Record Books. The records are presented in chronological order.
Function / Content
The records were created to document the exchange of interstate or international teachers into Victorian government schools between 1950 and 1975.
The records are arranged in chronological order. Information may include:
The name of the teacher
The place where they had been exchanged from
The name of the school(s) where positions were held
The period that position(s) were held or the date of appointment
Remarks
The remarks column usually includes a brief description of the position(s) that the teacher had been employed in and in some cases an assessment of the teacher's classroom abilities.
A teacher's registration number is sometimes shown, at times labelled 'continued at'. This number refers to VPRS 13579, Teacher Record Books for the period 1950 - c.1959. For records of teacher service commencing post c.1959, refer to VPRS 11369 Teacher Service History Cards - Primary, VPRS 11370 Teacher Service History Cards - Secondary, VPRS 11371 Teacher Service History Cards - Technical, VPRS 11372 Teacher Service History Cards - Relinquished Students or VPRS 11373 Teacher Service History Cards - Professional Officers. Consult the text for these series for further information on how to access a teacher's service history.
One point of interest lies in unit 2's specific documentation of 'Darwin Evacuees'; teachers relocated to Victoria in 1975 following the destruction caused by Cyclone Tracey in Darwin, December 1974.
This series was transferred to PROV from the Education History Unit of the Department of Education and Training.
Recordkeeping System
The volumes present entries in chronological order by the date of a teacher's first appointment in a Victorian school. Whilst no index exists for these records, there are few to survey.
