Description of this Series
Description of this Series
How to use the Records
There is no index available for the Temporary Teacher Inventory by School. The records are arranged firstly in categories by the type of school (eg. technical school, high school, primary school, etc.). All non-primary schools are then listed alphabetically. All primary schools are listed in numerical order by their school roll number. Researchers should consult the Index to Schools, held in Public Record Office Victoria reading rooms, to ascertain the roll number of the school(s) they require.
Function / Content
The Temporary Teacher Inventory by School was created to document the employment of teachers in individual government schools throughout the state of Victoria.
Information may include:
The roll number of the school (if it is a primary school)
The name of the school
Names of teachers employed on a temporary basis in the school during the designated period
Positions held
Remarks concerning whom the temporary teacher was replacing and the reason
The period of the placement
The class of salary
This series was transferred to PROV from the Education History Unit of the Department of Edcuation and Training.
Recordkeeping System
Entries in the Temporary Teacher Inventory by School are arranged in each volume primarily by categories of school. Primary schools are then listed numerically by their roll number and non-primary schools are organised alphabetically within separate categories.
Teachers are listed either alphabetically or without any clear arrangement. Teacher registration numbers are shown. This number is relevant to VPRS 13579, Teacher Record Books. Consult the text for this series for further information on how to access a teacher's service history.
One important point concerning arrangement to note is that there is an overlap in dates from unit 2 (1931 - 1948) to unit 3 (1945 - 1949). This may be explained by the fact that many temporary teachers, particularly women, were employed during World War II to fill positions left vacant by servicemen and servicewomen, and the overflow of temporary teachers may have disturbed the order of the inventories. Information on temporary teaching positions held in the period 1945 to1948 therefore appears in both volumes.
