Researchers should consult the Index to Schools, held in Public Record Office Victoria reading rooms, to ascertain the roll number of the school(s) they require.
Researchers should then consult the record details to identify the unit(s) required according to the year(s) in which they wish to research and request them using the archives@victoria web site.
The series will be available to view on microfilm.
- Function / Content
These records were created to provide a summary of the teaching positions held in government schools from 1893 - 1913. Although the bulk of information given concerns primary schools, positions in high schools (except for unit 8 where this type of school is not included), technical, cookery, woodwork, special, trade, migrant education, correspondence and agricultural high schools are also listed. Some of these types of schools, however, appear as categories in only one or two volumes. Relieving, exchange and specialised positions (such as speech pathologists, librarians, teacher education and physical education staff) are also listed, again at different points throughout the series.
Information provided may include:
School roll number School name Name of teacher employed at school (clearly distinguished as either 'permanent' or 'temporary' positions in later volumes) Registration number of teacher (that can be used to gain further information from VPRS 13579 Teacher Record Books) Position of teacher (often only the head teacher -'HT' - is identified) Classification of teacher Roll number of the school that the teacher moved to during the date range of the volume (usually written in red pen, with any outdated information neatly ruled out in red pen) Duration of appointment (this additional information is only provided in Unit 8). Remarks
The remarks column may include some brief information about an individual's career. Further information can be found in the Teacher Record Books (VPRS 13579).
Points of interest to researchers may also lie in appended newspaper clippings on school anniversaries, information about staff salaries and the classification of staff by designated numbers (see Unit 3 for a listing titled 'Regulations - Classification of Professional Division' taken from guidelines set out in 1902), and the different naming of school and position types. Unit 7 of the series also includes a list of Victorian teachers employed in the Pacific Islands (in Nauru, Papua, Tonga and Fiji).
This series was transferred to PROV from the Education History Unit of the Department of Education and Training.
- Recordkeeping System
Primary schools are listed in numerical order in each unit, according to their school roll number. Other schools, such as high schools and technical schools are generally listed alphabetically in sections preceding the primary school listings.
Sometimes, especially in early volumes, schools are shown to have been registered without employing any staff (a new volume may have been commenced before staff lists were received). Often the opening and closing dates of schools are noted beside staff names.
Staff that transferred from one school to another during the record's period are recorded on their former school's record but crossed out. A reference is thereafter made to the school that they had transferred to in the form of the new school's roll number. Those that left the their position permanently receive a code to indicate the reason for leaving. For example, 'RES' is written to indicate a resignation, 'REM' indicates a female teacher had remarried (and thus for most of this series' timeframe, she would have been no longer eligible for permanent employment as a teacher) and 'RET'D' indicates a retirement.
