Description of this SeriesDescription of this Series
  • How to use the Records
    Certificates are arranged in numerical order, which is approximately the same as chronological order of burial. Consult the Consignment Details to identify the unit containing the date range of interest.

    Indexes to this series compiled by Oakleigh City Council and the cemetery plan (containing grave numbers) may be inspected at the Oakleigh offices of the City of Monash (as at December 1998).

    Note: records for 1885 and 1886 have not been located (as at December 1998).

  • Function / Content
    All Victorian Cemeteries Acts required cemeteries to keep registers of burials and alphabetical indexes to enable searching of the registers.

    This series of burial certificates comprises the register of burials for the Oakleigh General Cemetery. Each certificate also served as a receipt for burial services provided by the undertaker.

    The format of the register appears to have been prescribed in a schedule to regulations, however this is subject to research.

    Information recorded for each burial comprised:

    * the name, age, occupation, address and denomination of the deceased and the supposed cause of death
    * the date and other information about the funeral
    * the number and other information about the grave site
    * the signature of the undertaker
    * the cost.

  • Recordkeeping System
    Each certificate was completed by the Sexton, signed by the undertaker and then countersigned by the Sexton on the reverse. Two copies were created: the Sexton retained the first, the second was sent to the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

    Certificates were numbered in a single number sequence that commenced at 1 at the start of each new calendar year.
