How to use the Records
Consult the Consignment list for this series and browse through the items.
Function / Content
This series contains various plans, diplomas and other related records to do with the Melbourne Olympics, 1956 and were maintained by the Organising Committee. Items in the series include a folio of plans relating to the construction of games venues, loose plans pertaining to the Olympic Village and blank Diplomas to be given to competitors and officials.
The folio of plans relates to the construction, renovation and course layouts for the venues used during the Olympics. The front cover is annotated with the name Mr. Holt, the Organising Committee Technical Director. The cover is also annotated with the number 1, indicating that other folios either of the same or other plans may have been created. Inside the folio cover is a typed index that identified individual plans, the content of which has been incorporated into the consignment listing. The folio was originally bound but the cover and plans have since been separated and have been listed as individual items. All are numbered sequentially. Two other plans of venues are numbered in the same way but are not identified on the folio index.
Five plans of the Olympic Village are included in this series. Four are identical, the fifth has been annotated and coloured, showing where each country was to be housed and contains notes to understanding these annotations.
Other items in this series include two maps of Melbourne showing the location of the training and competition venues, though one has been annotated slightly and two plans of the hostels used by athletes and officials in Ballarat, one of which has been annotated also. There is also a list of venue preparations for September to November 1956, nine blank copies of the Olympic Diploma given to the first six placegetters and some officials after the games were finished and a painting of the design of the Olympic Plaque at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) with the list of champions to go on it.
Recordkeeping System
The folio of plans has a numbering system that is fully indexed and plans are numbered 1 to 55. Each plan has the corresponding number in pink in a square on either the front or back. The only exceptions are the aerial photo of Lake Wendouree which is indexed but has no number and plan 39a which is numbered as part of the folio but not indexed.
All other items in this series have no identifiable numbering system and have been arranged in the consignment by archival staff in 2009.
