  • How to use the Records
    Function/Contents

    This series consists of a register of inward correspondence received by the Land Branch of the Colonial Secretary. From April 1852 until October 1852 correspondence regarding immigration matters was also registered in the Land Branch registry system.

    For more information regarding the registry system of which this series is a component see the series description for VPRS 2878 Inward Registered Correspondence II [Land Branch].

    These registers were used to record summary details and allocate unique identification numbers (registration numbers) to each letter received. Each inward letter was, on receipt and registration allocated a number from the registers for identification. This consisted of an annual single number, that is a sequential number prefixed by the last two figures of the year, with the numbering sequence recommencing at 1 at the start of each year.

    eg. the one-hundred and twenty-third letter received in 1851 was given the number 51/123.

    The inward correspondence appears to have been filed in annual single number order in pigeon-hole cabinets/presses. It appears that no index to the correspondence was created as part of the registry system.

    System of Arrangement/Control

    Each register was identified by the year of use. Entries for each letter were made chronologically by date of receipt, being allocated a sequential registration number in this order.

    Previous Series

    Prior to July 1851 lands matters directed to the Superintendent were registered within the same Land Branch registry system, however with the establishment of the new administration a new annual single number sequence was begun.     Prior to April 1852 immigration matters were registered in a separate Immigration Branch registry system, see VPRS 116 Inward Registered Correspondence II [Immigration Branch].

    Subsequent Series

    In October 1852 the separate Land Branch and General Branch registries of the Colonial Secretary's Office were merged to form one registry, probably reflecting the declining number of lands related matters now dealt with directly by the Colonial Secretary's administration. The registration numbers of the Land and General registries were added up and the registration numbering resumed from the total obtained.
