- How to use the Records
**In the first instance, researchers should refer to the microfiche copy of the registers in the Reading Room. The date range of the registers on the microfiche is 1864-1893. The registers filmed were VPRS 4527/P0, unit 1 to unit 43 (to end of 1893).**
Having obtained the relevant ward number from the index at the front of almost every vulume, or knowing the approximate date of admission, refer to the relevant volume as described in the records description list..
- Function / Content
The function of the Ward Registers is to register wards of the State and to maintain relevant information about them. That information includes name, sex, date of birth, native place, religion, ability to read or write, date of commitment, committing bench, date of admission, term, cause of commitment, whether parents are living, vaccination details, previous history, where stationed, licensing out details, details re discharge and half yearly report information.
- Recordkeeping System
The registers are arranged by the ward number assigned to the particular individual.
