How to use the Records
For details of applications from a specific place, consult the apprpriate alphabetical section.
Function / Content
Commissioners of the Supreme Court were appointed by the Chief Justice for the taking of affidavits in Victoria, interstate and overseas. The duration of the Commission and the extent of the jurisdiction was defined in the Commission. Many of the Commissions were applicable only whilst the holder resided in a particular district or was the holder of a specific office such as Clerk of the Court or officer in charge of a police station. Commissions were also issued to practising barristers and solicitors, municipal officials and other local persons of good character and community standing.
This series consists of the record of applications for the granting of Commissions for the Taking of Affidavits. Recorded are the name of the place from which and person from whom the application came, the person's profession or occupation, the date received, the annual single number given to the application, the date of submission, remarks regarding the application and the date upon which the Commission was issued. Under remarks, notations were made regarding whether a Commission was issued or not, the reason for non-issue and if issued, the date and the number of the Commission as given in VPRS 5378 Index to Commissioners for Taking Affidavits.
Recordkeeping System
The series is divided into alphabetical sections based upon the name of the place from which the application came. Within each section, entries are chronological.
